The best beaches in Hong Kong

If you think Hong Kong, China, is all banks and business, think again. It also has great beaches, including the one where Olympic windsurfing gold medalist Shan Shan learned her trade. Summers in Hong Kong are hot and humid, so you’re well advised to head for the waves to cool off. Here’s a rundown of the best spots.

Far from repulsive

Visitors to Repulse Bay can combine beach life with shopping and restaurants. The classy residential area has colonial-style buildings inspired by the 1920s hotel that once stood on the site.

Golden sands

Hong-Kong’s first Olympic gold was won by windsurfer Lee Lai-Shan, known as Shan Shan, in Atlanta in 1996. Her home beaches are on the island of Cheung Chau, where there is also a surf center that hires out equipment.

Sunset spot

The village of Pui O boasts beautiful beaches, including one of Hong Kong’s longest. There are also lots of great places to eat here. Stay a while and watch the sunset from the sand dunes.

Crow’s nest

The pirates who once held sway here are thankfully conspicuous by their absence, although the watch towers remain. It’s a peaceful area with lots of small eateries.
